Popenguine-Ndayane

Description

Popenguine-Ndayane is a town in Senegal, located in the south of Dakar 70 km, on the Petite Cote(small coast), in the department of m'bour and the region of Thiès. Since 2008, it has united two locality, Popenguine and Ndayane.

HISTORY

It was Founded 350 years ago, the village was firstly called Poponguine. It became Popenguine with the initiative of the president Léopold Sédar Senghor, one of whose poems is called Return to Popenguine. The town is a favourite place for holidays for the heads of State of Senegal.

Administration

Popenguine was part of the rural community of Diass. It was built in the town in July 20081. The Popenguine classified Forest and the natural Reserve of Popenguine are included in the village areas.

Popenguine is buit in the village with Ndayane and Popenguine sérère, with the name « Popenguine Ndayane ». The first mayor was Mamadou Mansour Thiandoum,he was  elected on the 14 of  April2009 by a 36-member City Council.

The nearest location  are Santiaba, Keuri Kaw, Tiambokh, Poponguine Serere, Gamboulem and Tialane.

Dakar, the capital of Senegal, is located 71 km away. 

Economic activities

The origin of the Village fishermen and the farmers, it is known today as a place for Catholic pilgrimage (Basilica our lady of liberty) and for its protected area, the Natural reserve of Popenguine.
