Description
Pulai Condong Mosque
The Minaret of Pulai Condong Mosque, a local flagship structure, was designed and built by Hj. Ab. Samad bin Hj. Abdullah in year 1856 (1273H). The minaret is also known as Pulai Condong Mosque Tower from a loose English translation from the Malay language.
Background
Tuan Guru Haji Abdul Samad bin Haji Abdullah bin Haji Hashim was born in 1207 Hijri corresponding 1792 AD, known as Tok Pulai Chondong is the person responsible for opening the Kampung Masjid Bilal Talib and build Pulai Chondong. The mosque is said to have been burned twice before Tok Pulai Chondong decided to move to Kampung Surau not far from the initial placement.
Historically, Tuan Guru Abdul Samad told the local people to find and choose their own timber from forest areas of Bukit China, about 10 kilometers from the location of the mosque; to build a tower of wood, the wood was pulled by rope from the forest on a gotong-royong by residents.
Standing at 18 meters high and about 2.8 meters width, the minaret was built with an unroofed pole at its core which acts as an axis.
The minaret was said to be made in cooperation of hundreds of men. The structure is made from chengal wood by only adze (Malay: beliung), axe and chisel. The structural integrity of the minaret is really strong considering it is still standing after Kelantan was hit by a big flood and storm in 1880 (1297H). This minaret remains in good condition today and is still serving its original purpose as a place where muezzin calls out the call for prayers.
