Parque da Cidade is a multipurpose park located in Asa Sul in Brasilia , in the Federal District . It was founded on October 11, 1978 and has 4.2 km².

It is one of the largest and most extensive outdoor leisure centers in the city, concentrating sports courts, artificial lakes , amusement park , equestrian center and hiking, skating and cycling trails . The park is considered a patrimony of Brasilia .

Originally named after Rogério Pithon Farias, a young man - son of the then governor - who died in a car accident. [ 1 ]It was renamed to Dona Sarah Kubitschek Park in 1997. The park gained national fame through the music Eduardo and Mônica of the Brazilian group Legião Urbana .

History

In addition to the superquadras project, which provided for large green areas, the pilot plan of the urbanist Lúcio Costa provided for a botanical garden in the South Wing , and a zoo in the North Wing , near the Monumental Axis, however after a series of modifications of the original project was decided that the two areas would be added in a single park, the Zoobotanical Park of Brasilia, in the South Wing, whose project would be developed by Roberto Burle Marx , in 1961 . However, only in the 1970s, with the increase of the city, did the need to occupy its limits to protect itself from invasions, coupled with the need to create a large public recreation area, especially for children, that the governor of the Federal District, Elmo Serejo Farias , determined the establishment of a recreational park in 1974 , with an area of 340 hectares, which required the creation of a new project.  Lúcio Costa was responsible for urban planning, architects Oscar Niemeyer and Glauco Campello were responsible for some buildings to be built and Burle Marx dedicated himself to the landscape project. The park was inaugurated by President Ernesto Geisel and Governor Elmo Farias in 1978 under the name Pitton Farias Recreation Park, a tribute to the son of the governor, who died at the time, but is popularly known as Parque da Cidade. In 1997 , the governor Cristóvam Buarque sanctioned law modifying its name to Park of the City Dona Sarah Kubitschek , in honor of the wife of the president Juscelino Kubitschek .

Ana Lídia Park is a recreational park within the Sarah Kubitschek Park. It was inaugurated in 1971, underwent a renovation in 1999, along with the general works of the Sarah Kubitschek Park.

The park was created under the name of Iolanda Costa e Silva , wife of President Artur da Costa e Silva , who died in 1969 , but was renamed in honor of Ana Lídia, a child found dead with signs of torture near the University of Brasilia , in 1973 . The Ana Lídia Case has not been solved until today; the crime has been decreed.

In the park are presented several themes and reflections. There are references to pop , half-tropicalist bragging, Disney animated feature romanticism, and a traditional conception of childhood. It features a boot-shaped slide, and a pumpkin car from Cinderella, with all the rococo formed by the branches in the fairy tale wing. It has the boys' wing, with Apache huts, old west caravans and viking boats . In the background there is the futuristic or progressive wing, with a giant rocket and a bubble-shaped jungle.  About six thousand people pass through the park during the weekend.
