Description
The Fundació Joan Miró was inaugurated in 1975, and at the artist's insistence became a center for the promotion of contemporary art. The building, very avant-garde at the time, is located on the mountain of Montjuïc. It is a work by architect Josep Lluís Sert, a good friend of Joan Miró, and was expanded in1986 by Jaume Freixa.
The building uses characteristic elements of Mediterranean architecture such as tile floors, wood, vaulted ceilings, and the colour white to make good use of natural light.
The permanent exhibition displays many pieces by Joan Miró (paintings, sculpture and tapestries), especially from the last years of his life, but also by artists such as Chillida, Alfaro, Tàpies and Calder.
The museum constantly programmes temporary exhibitions, mainly related to contemporary art. The so-called Espacio 13 is devoted to the youngest, most innovative artists.
The center has an important contemporary art library, a bookshop and an auditorium where one can attend conferences, seminars and concerts and even workshops and children's plays.
