WR. Soepratman Museum

Description

Wage Rudolf Soepratman is the Great Hero of the author of Indonesia's national anthem. Born on Monday, 9 March 1903 in Jatinegara Jakarta, he believed in Islam and did not follow the political organization. His father named Senen, was a sergeant in Battalion VIII. Mothered by his brother in-law WM Van Eldik (Sastromihardjo) he had learnt to play guitar and the violin.

In 1914, Soepratman followed Roekijem to Makassar. Over there, he was sent to school and financed by Roekijem's husband named Willem Van Eldik. Soepratman study Dutch language in night school during 3 years then continued it to Normaalschool. He went to an education school in Makasar and when he was 20 years, he was made  a teacher in Angka 2 School. Two years after, he got the Klein Ambtenaar certificate.

When he lived in Makassar, Supratman had studied music from his brother in-law named Willem Van Eldik, so that hecould play the violin and compose songs. When living in Jakarta, once upon a time he read a composition in Timbul magazine. The composition writer invited the Indonesia music experts to create the national anthem.

In October 1928 in Jakarta, there was a Youngster Congress. The congress was called 'Sumpah Pemuda'. At the congress' closing night, on 28 Octobers 1928, Supratman played his song creation  instrumentally in front of the participant public. That time was the first time the Great Indonesia song was performed publicly. All which were  present were surprised to hear it. Swiftly the song was known amongst the  national movements. If the political organization performed a congress, the,Great Indonesia song was always warbled. The song is the materialization of the association of the desire for independence.

He ever built music group which stream jazz called Black and white until 1924. He went to Surabaya and Bandung become newspaper correspondence of "Kaoem Moeda".

By 28 Octobers 1928, performed a Second Youngster Congress with result of young man oath that confessed one fatherland, one nation, one Indonesia. In that congress had ben warbled the Great Indonesia song, accompanied by WR Soepratman's violin.

The effect of creating the Great Indonesia song was that he always was hunted by the Dutch Indies Police, which caused him to fall sick in Surabaya. Because of his last creation song "Matahari Terbit" in the early of 7 Augusts 1938, he was caught when  broadcasting the song with the guides in NIROM Embong Malang street, Surabaya and jailed in Kalisosok Surabaya, and then died on 17 Augusts 1938, and buried on Wednesday in Kapasan graveyard.
